John McCaskie was born 1818 at Creevy & was an adventurous voyager!! He first went to USA California in 1838, then returned to Ireland before emigrating once more to Australia in 1841on the Moffat. He married there on 24 September 1850. His wife was Catherine Haliburton-Nealings b 1828.who had arrived from Cupar in Fife Scotland. in 1848 on the Canton. She was with a group of emigrants under the care of the Coloniser, Rev Dunmore Lang.

John & Catherine later went to San Francisco California on the John Calvin in May 1851 to join the Gold Rush. Their first child Elizabeth was born on board ship as it entered San Francisco harbour. They returned to Australia in 1857 on the Spree and settled in Balmain a suburb of Australia. They had 11 children in all 3 of whom died in infancy.

John was mentioned in "Australian Men of Mark" & The Sands Directory -   between 1861 and 1887 John owned several businesses:- Dairyman, Fancy Bazaar (Drapery & Millinery run by his wife), Paper Bag Maker, Gardener-fruit and vegetables, Greengrocer, Fruiterer
John died in 1895, aged 77 & Catherine died in 1911, aged 83.

Neither Elizabeth nor James married. James became a successful orchadist.

Sarah Ann married George Beaman - they had 7 children:-

Ruby b 1883 married Arthur Walker - children Warwick Dulcie & George
Kitty b 1884 married Albert McKeon - one daughter Agnes b 1905 married George Casey. They had 2 boys and a girl. Kitty later married Jack Forster and had one daughter Claire
Elizabeth b 1886 married James Lewis - daughter Ruth 
James b 1888 married Elizabeth Cassin in 1910
Thomas b 1890 
Lila b 1893 married Frank Davies - daughter Doreen
Christabel b 1897 married Robert Paterson - son Young Robert
Children who died in Infancy:-

8 Thomas & 9 Robert were McCaskie Bros.& Co Blacksmiths and Coachsmiths.

11 Agnes Moodie (1864-1938) married Henry Gunther. They had 4 children. She corresponded with her cousin in San Francisco.

2 Elizabeth Marguerite(Daisy) (1901-2000) married James Beattie - 2 sons known

1 Clarence married Lilian M Borthwick - they had a son

2 Milton (1900-1963) married Gladys Virginia Ryan - they had 4 children - Robert died in infancy & Norma Chloris (1925-1994) married George Field (1923-89) - her daughter Monica would be happy to receive any emails about the Australian descendants - see below

3 Lois 1902-1903

4 Clyde Rupert (1904-1979) married Lillian Lauder-Brown - they had 6 children

5 Chloris Estella (1906-1992) married Clarence Robert Wheeler (1902-1972) They had 5 children

James McCaskie of Morpeth NSW

James McCaskie (1829-59) emigrated to Sydney in 1849, on the Spree. Shipping records show he was 20 yrs & a Farm Labourer from Ardstraw, County Tyrone,Ireland He moved to Morpeth up in the Hunter region of NSW & in 1850 he married Mary Lapsley b 1832 in Timahoe, Queens County, Ireland. She had arrived on the Maria. James became a policeman and they had 5 children:-

2 children died in infancy    1 Anne Mary(1853-4)    2 John (1859-1860)

hey owned a hotel in Newtown  "Sir Joseph Banks"- they also owned horses & coaches, which carried passengers from Newton & Botany to their hotel. Mary Ann was very proud of the cushions & bobble curtains she made to decorate the coaches ,

4 Elizabeth (1855-1928) married   John Green in 1882  - they had 4 children

5 James Thomas (1857-1914) married  James - they had 5 children

Ada  Caroline Alma Gertrude b 1899 married Herbert H Martin in 1920 - 8 children - one daughter has done some family tree research

James caught Slow Fever & died aged 30 in 1859, Mary later remarried - to John Calcot
