John Gordon McAskie, son of Rev James McAskie, was born 22 May 1859 in Lackawanna County, Dunmore Philadelphia. He died 18 June 1929 .

Lackawanna County, Pennsylvania, was formed from parts of  Luzerne County August 13, 1878, and was the last county to be created. It was named for the Lackawanna River

Nothing much is known about John Gordon's childhood.
He crossed to USA from Ireland in 1879 on the  Anchoria - arriving on 1 Sep 1879 - aged 20

There is also a record of John Gordon crossing to Ireland in 1901. Was he reared in the US as he married there and was in business there? Who would he have been entrusted to - his grandparents Gordon?

John Gordon married in 1883 - to Eleonor H Hughes born March 1862 in PA -  they had 3 children
Harold Lathrope Oct 1885-1972 Kenneth G born Oct 1889 Donald W born abt 1900.

From the American Family Immigration History Centre - Ellis Island John Gordon McAskie made a trip to Ireland
and returned to New York via Rotterdam in 1907 on the Noordam

John Gordon became an attorney, owned his own house and lived at 1648 Adams Ave Lackawanna, Dunmore Philadelphia

His partners were Charles E Bradbury & Martin E Kays.

Mary F. Kays, widow of Martin R Kays lived at 1656 Sanderson Avenue Scranton in 1891.

Charles E Bradbury also had the following businesses:- People's Printing Co. Limited Arcade bldg and 328 Lackawanna avenue & Wilson Lumber Co. 13 Commonwealth bldg Scranton.


Harold Lathrope  married Mildred Lee O ? 1885-1977 - they lived in Front St., Elmhurst and they had 2 known children Gordon G and Carol A born abt 1914 Gordon born 1912  died in 12 Jul 1990 in Syracuse, Onondaga, NY. Harold was employed by United Collieries Co. as a manager at their Peoples Park Building., Scranton, Pa.

Kenneth married Rhoda Jenkins born abt 1894 and they had 2 known children Virginia J born 1916 and Jean W born abt 1921. They lived in Elmhurst Borough, Lackawanna County

"At Camp H. M. Boies"

The sixth day at the lake brought most delightful weather. The sky was clear and the air cool.  At six o'clock the boys, as usual, answered roll call, and at 11 o'clock the regiment had the daily morning battalion and skirmish drill firing blank cartridges. The daily afternoon drill came off at four o'clock, followed by a dress parade, making an excellent showing.

The Hughes family
Eleanor's parents were Henry Hughes and Amelia D. Henry was born 1840 and his mother was Martha born 1810. Henry was a stereotyper. Henry and Amelia had the following children

William born 1857,  John McA born 1856, Bertha M born 1870, Katie W born 1871 and Amelia W born 1880

1920 Census. Amelia was a widow, with a boarding house in Philadelphia with her daughter Bertha aged 50
