Matthew and Eliza Smith, my great grandparents had 12 children :-

Rebecca Jane,           Robert James,           Thomas,           Jane,           Mary,           John Caldwell,    
Samuel,          Elizabeth Catherine,           William,           Andrew Joseph,           Emily Louisa         and         George.

Rebecca Jane 1854-1924, eldest daughter of Matthew and Eliza, married Rev Hugh Moore 1839 -1927.
They moved to
Dublin. They had 5 children - Robert, Ernest, Rebecca, Frederick James & William Henry. Sons attended Wesley College St Stephens Green Dublin

Robert Moore married Essie Thorpe. He was in business in Carlow but in 1922 he moved to Rhyl in S Wales

Ernest Moore was employed by the Bank of Ireland - he married Millicent ? and they had one son Hugh

Sara Jane Moore 1880- 1896 died aged 16 at school at Methodist College Belfast

Frederick Moore 1883 - 1973  was a Dublin Civil Servant - he married Jean Moir 1887-1972,  a nurse from Denny Scotland - they had 2 sons & 2 daughters - boys educated at St. Columba's College Dublin (one Orthopaedic Surgeon, other C of I Canon) and girls at Alexandra's College Dublin ( one married C of I Canon)

William Moore born 1885 was also a Civil Servant in Dublin married Geraldine Whittaker - had 2 children


Robert James Smith, 1855-1942, known as RJ - eldest son of Matthew and Eliza  - married Amelia (Emily) Caldwell from
Ballybogan Lifford   He moved to Strabane 1876 and worked for William Harper, merchant Main St Strabane, then  went into business in 1883 in Strabane (agricultural shop and supplies) and lived at Ballyduff House Lifford

The previous owner of Ballyduff House was William McCrea Knox, landowner - who died
27/01/1878 and left effects under £6000 - administered by his brother Robert, a solicitor of Londonderry

RJ and Amelia stayed at 87 Egmont St Belfast - along with Thomas Smith and Annie Smyth - when they signed the Ulster Covenant Ulster Covenant Signatures 1912

They had 10 children:- Elizabeth,  William,  James,  Robert, George,   Edward, Andrew,  Samuel Hamilton, living male & Catherine Mary

The following did not marry:- Elizabeth1893-1981, James 1896-1989 - a doctor, Edward 1902-80 - a banker, Andrew 1904-80 - a farmer, Samuel died aged 4 months in 1906

George 1900-1969 married Aileen Colhoun & they had 4 children. Aileen was a talented artist. She had exhibitions. They lived at Glenmore House Curley Hill Strabane - had 2 sons and 2 daughters

Catherine 1911-1983 married Brigadier Charlie Holmes, Royal Army Pay Corps, from Rathlin Island in 1952. He was a great friend of "Monty" - General Montgomery. He retired from the army to his farm at Ballybogan. He died in 1981 and is buried in Urney graveyard Co Tyrone His service record

William 1894 -1977 married Maud Frackleton.They had twin daughters.  Her father was Henry Frackleton, a Methodist minister - he was at Railway Road Church Strabane in 1913

Robert 1898 -1965 married Irene Sweeney (Sweeney and Co Egg and Butter Merchants Strabane) - had 3 daughters & 2 sons - was a farmer at Ballybogan


Thomas Smith, 1857-1936, 2nd son of Matthew and Eliza, was my grandfather & married  Minnie McAskie in 1907 They lived at Lake View House Magheralough

Thomas Smith married twice. His first wife Margaret Neilands died in 1904.
They had one son Bobby who emigrated to New Zealand

Minnie

Thomas was a very astute business man. He bought the first Model T Ford outside Belfast in 1920(The car was only developed in 1908) He also had an electric generator at that time when others used Tilley lamps and candles - (Baronscourt castle only had a generator from 1908 & electricity only came to Ardstraw in 1949 after contributions by residents)

Thomas and Minnie had 6 children:-

Elizabeth Caldwell, Andrew Thomas, Joseph McAskie,  Sarah Henrietta Marion, John Raymond, Frederick George Stewart

Elizabeth Caldwell Smith, my mother 1908 - married Jack Donaldson 1909-1995 from Cloghore Ballyshannon  in 1937. They had 2 children and 5 grandchildren

Jack died in 1995 and Lily died on 05/05/2006 aged 98.
They are buried in Mid Calder graveyard

 I married George Hunter - he was born in Musselburgh, Mid Lothian Scotland in1943 Hunters of Dalkeith, Mid Lothian Scotland

Andrew Thomas ,1909 -1977, and Joseph McAskie 1911-1994  farmed at Magheralough. Andrew Thomas remained single and Joseph McAskie married and had 5 children and 16 grandchildren

Sarah Henrietta Marion 1912-1962 married Elwyn Davies 1920-1980 from Cardiff in 1945 - they had 3 daughters and 8 grandchildren

John Raymond 1914-1997 married Gwen Gill 1929-1991 from Ardstraw - John trained to be a minister and they went to New Zealand  - but they came back. List of Castlederg locals who became ministers - They had one daughter

Frederick George Stewart  1919-1920 - died aged 6 months


Jane Smith,  born 11 April 1858 - died of croup as a baby



Mary Smith
born 1859 married Robert Leckie Gourley in 1885 He was known as R.L. They lived at Tober Ballindrait Lifford, Donegal.

They had 7 children all of whom also signed the Covenant:-

R.L. was disabled - 
He once went to a house auction in Strabane with his brother-in-law Thomas Smith, my grandfather. They sat on a window-sill upstairs because of RL's disability. The ceiling collapsed with the weight of the crowd and the 2 men had to be rescued by ladder from the upstairs room. Many others were hurt

Ruby Gourley born 1871 married John McAskie - this was a double relationship in our family.viz.

Ruby's mother  was a sister of my grandfather, Thomas Smith
Ruby's husband was a brother of my grandmother Minnie McAskie Smith
.

They had 4 daughters and one son and had a drapery shop in Castlederg

Samuel Smith born 1864 and died of TB in 1889.
He had
matriculated from the Royal University of Ireland in 1884

Their Belfast College became the Queen's University of Belfast in 1908)
 

Elizabeth Catherine Smith born1865
died aged 11 in 1876 of diptheria

 

 William Smith 1868-88 trained as a teacher but also died young during operation for water in lung


Andrew Joseph Smith1869-1901 was a Traveller for Austins department store Derry. He died of throat cancer.


Emily Smith 1872-1951 married Laurence Tubman They lived at Tempo.Co Fermanagh Ulster Covenant Signatures 1912
They had 2 sons & 3 daughters:- Olive and Elizabeth died as infants, Ernest lived in Belfast - 1 living son. Albert 1916-2006 married and lived in Belfast -1 living son..
Edith became the postmistress in Hillsborough Co Down. Later she married  Bill Heatherington, a chemist  & they moved to
Huddersfield - 2 living children

George Honeyford Smith 1874-1957 married Annetta  Louisa  Cooke 1881-1953, from Belfast on 23 Mar 1909

George worked as Produce Salesman before forming his own business George H Smith and Co 111 William St Derry - hauliers, then bought over Campbell Bros at Princes Quay

They had 2 children Robert Wesley 1911-1993 & Dorothy Elizabeth Hickland 1914-1985

Robert
Wesley-Smith lived in Dublin and Cork - joined the Royal Navy in 2nd World War and became a Lieutenant Commander. He married Oona Booth 1911-1974 , daughter of John Booth a local GP on 01/06/1938 - had 5 children - he went to
New Zealand after the death of his wife. One son became a doctor in New Zealand 


 

Dorothy married Richard Snodden 1909-1983 in 1940.a Methodist minister in Carlisle Rd Church Derry.Later he changed to Congregational Church and went to Eastwood Notts from 1940 to1945, then Coleraine to 1955 then Nelson St Greenock to 1983 when he retired. He was a very popular minister and had about 700 people at his memorial
